Langkawi Pre-Wedding Photoshoot: How the Day Runs

A lighter session to begin, then an evening sunset with gown. That’s my go to.

By Jon Low

Pre-wedding in Langkawi usually are flexible, depending if we are photographing a full-fledged pre-wedding session or a mini casual portrait session.

01

The pre-wedding morning in Langkawi

We usually start the day easy, with couple dress down, smart travelling casual. Something they want to be remembered by when traveling.

Make up starts early on, so the session can start way too early so we catch the sun. It can be photos at the resort they were staying, or moving around in the scenic Langkawi with me.

The session would last about 2 hours before it gets too hot.

02

Midday: rest up

We head back to their residence to freshen up, rest up, food, before we start on the next session.

03

Sunset: the gown

Afternoon make up are usually the more detailed one, where we prepare the couple to dress up in their wedding gowns. The photography session starts about 5pm til 7:30, 8pm for sunsets.

The catamaran

Unless of cos they opt for The Catamaran experience, where we will be shooting the gown first, and dress down from it.

Catamaran are usually early shoot. We leave from the jetty at about 8:30am.

When it rains

If it’s casual portraits, dress down where we easily move around, we probably brave through the rain with umbrellas. A different kind of portfolio.

If it’s too heavy, then we will probably miss the morning, and hope the day clears off.

If all fails, my next day would be available for 1 extra session.

Questions we get asked

What is the weather like in Langkawi in August? Is there haze?

Expect rain but it’s manageable. Rain is scattered all year round. A little more in August. Short bursts, nothing that shuts a shoot down. Haze is more of a September/October concern. The overcast light in August actually works well for portraits.

Who does hair and make-up?

We have our designated make up and hair stylist. Or if they have their own, we can work together. We will prepare a look book via Pinterest so they know the styling that we like shooting.

How do we get around the island?

We would have a car to move around the island.

Which beach and sunset spots do you use?

We have our preferred slots, and certainly these places are different on any given day. So, we plan accordingly.
